Good to know
The Oriental, as it was originally called, dates back to 1876 and became Siam's first luxury hotel when its main building opened in 1887. Writers, royalty and celebrities have passed through ever since, and the hotel was renamed Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok in 2008. Today it combines the historic original wing with taller modern towers overlooking the Chao Phraya.
The dining line-up is a destination in its own right, from Anne-Sophie Pic's two-Michelin-star Le Normandie to Cantonese cooking at The China House, riverside Thai at Sala Rim Naam and live jazz at the Bamboo Bar. The spa sits across the river, reached by the hotel's own boats, which also make sightseeing easy. Book directly for river-view rooms.
