Thing to do
Borough Market
London's celebrated food market beside London Bridge station, with traders selling produce, cheese, bread, street food and specialist groceries.
A Sunday-only street market off Hackney Road where traders sell cut flowers and plants, lined by around sixty independent shops.
Good to know
Every Sunday, Columbia Road in the East End fills with stalls selling cut flowers, bulbs, shrubs and houseplants, and the traders' patter is part of the entertainment. The Victorian terraces behind the stalls hold around sixty independent businesses, from galleries and vintage shops to delis, garden stores and cafés.
The market runs from about 08:00 until mid-afternoon. Come early for the best choice of plants, or later in the day when sellers may be keen to clear their stock. It gets very crowded by late morning, so travel light. Some shops also open on weekdays, though Sunday is when the street comes alive. Combine a visit with Brick Lane and Spitalfields, both a short walk away; Hoxton Overground station is the closest stop.
