Good to know
Sidecar is one of the bars that put Delhi on the international cocktail map. It opened in 2018 in the M Block Market of Greater Kailash II, South Delhi, and was soon ranked number 26 on The World's 50 Best Bars in 2022 and number 18 on Asia's 50 Best Bars in 2023. It is run by Yangdup Lama and Minakshi Singh, two of the most experienced figures in India's bar industry.
The bar sits on the first floor of a building in the market, above a bank branch, and the room is wood-panelled, light and spacious. It feels relaxed rather than formal, which makes it an easy place for first-time visitors to settle in, whether at the counter or at a table with friends.
The drinks are the point. The house cocktail, the Sidecar, is reinvented here with cognac and bourbon, roasted corn and lime acid. The menus change over time and draw on Indian ingredients and memories; a recent menu called Dear Delhi was a tribute to the city, with drinks such as Bhumi, built on sous-vide makrut lime gin, camphor cordial and orange foam, inspired by the founders' memories of suburban life in the region. If you are unsure what to order, describe the flavours you like and ask for a suggestion.
Prices are high by Indian standards, though in line with a bar of this calibre. Booking or arriving early is wise at weekends, when tables fill quickly. Dress smart casual, and remember that alcohol is not served to anyone under 25 in Delhi, so carry ID.
Sidecar suits cocktail enthusiasts, couples and small groups of friends, and is an excellent introduction to how creative India's bar scene has become. It is less suited to large, loud parties. Solo drinkers will feel comfortable at the bar counter.
The bar is in Greater Kailash II's M Block Market in South Delhi, so it is easy to combine with dinner elsewhere in the area. Taxis and ride-hailing cars are the easiest way to get there and back late at night, and the phone number is the best way to check opening times and make a reservation.
