Why we recommend it

Peixes is a lively little seafood bistro near the Opéra, at the edge of the old town, and it is listed in the 2026 Michelin Guide. It opened in 2015 under Armand Crespo, and its name, pronounced like the French word pêche, means fish in Portuguese. The menu is built around small plates of fish and shellfish designed for sharing, and the group also runs a second address, Peixes Bonaparte, on Rue Bonaparte.

The cooking mixes Mediterranean produce with South American and other international influences. Expect ceviche, carpaccio and tataki of the day's fish, crisp fried fish, and cod fritters, along with other plates that change with the catch. Much of the fish is served raw or barely cooked to show off its quality, the restaurant favours short supply chains and seasonal produce, and the menu changes every two months. The wine list leans towards natural wines. Ordering several dishes to share is the best approach, and it makes Peixes a good choice for a lighter meal than a full three-course dinner.

The room is small, decorated with blue and white tiles, and there is a terrace on the street. The Michelin Guide marks it as worth queueing for and good for solo diners.

According to the Michelin Guide, Peixes serves continuously from midday on Monday to Saturday and opens in the evening on Sunday, but times can change, so check the website before you go. Do not count on booking: the restaurant has a policy of not taking reservations, and the terrace fills fast, so arrive early for lunch or at the start of dinner service. The dining room is air-conditioned and accessible for wheelchair users, and cards are accepted.

It suits couples, friends, solo travellers and anyone who loves seafood, and it is particularly handy for a meal before or after a performance at the Opéra. Children who like fish will be happy with the fried dishes. Allow about an hour.

Rue Jacques-Médecin is a short street between the Opéra and the seafront at the western edge of Vieux Nice. From here you are a couple of minutes from the Cours Saleya, Place Masséna and the Promenade des Anglais, which makes it easy to combine with a stroll by the sea.
