The Dwarika’s Hotel
A family-run heritage hotel opened in 1972, built around courtyards of rescued Newari woodcarving and home to the Krishnarpan tasting-menu restaurant.
A five-star hotel in Newar style on 37 acres near Boudhanath Stupa, with 280 rooms, an outdoor pool and stupa-view rooms.
Good to know
Hyatt Regency Kathmandu is the largest five-star hotel in Nepal and a short walk from Boudhanath Stupa. It opened on 31 August 2000 and was formally inaugurated by King Birendra the following month. Set on 37 acres of landscaped grounds, it was built in traditional Newar style, and Nepal Traveller marked its 25th anniversary in 2025 with a profile of its carved wooden beams, decorative windows, open courtyards and terracotta carvings. Buddhist chortens and other motifs decorate the lobby and grounds.
There are 280 rooms, including seven suites. The rooms most in demand are those with a king bed and a view of the stupa, and the range also takes in twin rooms, Club Access rooms, Regency Suites, a Regency Executive Suite and the Presidential Suite. Facilities include an outdoor pool with terrace seating, spa treatment rooms, a steam room and jacuzzi, a fitness centre and a tennis court.
The hotel was approved in 1992 and took eight years to complete. Rox is the signature restaurant, serving Italian food from a wood-fired oven together with cocktails. Sesame offers Pan-Asian cooking, and The Living Room and the Lounge and Bar serve drinks and light refreshments. Its events spaces host galas, including Christmas Eve celebrations with live entertainment.
The location suits visitors who want to stay beside the city's great Buddhist monument. Boudhanath is within walking distance, so you can join the evening kora around the stupa and be back at the hotel for dinner, and the international airport is about 4 km away, which helps with early flights such as the morning mountain flights.
The hotel was founded as a public-private partnership, is run by Taragaon Regency Hotels and is listed on the Nepal Stock Exchange, and it employs around 400 people. It won service excellence awards in 2017, 2018 and 2019. Its construction was estimated at Rs 1.5 billion but came in at Rs 3.4 billion, and after many years of losses it reported record profits by 2019. Boudha itself is home to more than 50 Tibetan monasteries and gompas, along with the restaurants and craft workshops of the Tibetan community, so a stay here gives easy access to a very different side of Kathmandu from Thamel.
