Good to know
Hotel Alexandra is a four-star boutique hotel on H. C. Andersens Boulevard, close to City Hall Square, and it is one of the best places in Copenhagen to experience Danish mid-century design in everyday use. The hotel has 61 rooms, and they are furnished with carefully curated Danish mid-century classics, a living collection that the hotel says has been built over 20 years with a genuine passion for Danish design history.
Rather than displaying design pieces behind ropes, Alexandra lets guests sit on them. Chairs, sofas, lamps and textiles by well-known Danish designers fill the rooms, and a series of suites are conceived as tributes to the most significant Danish furniture designers, among them a room named after Jens Risom. The result is warm and characterful, and quite different from the minimal look of many modern hotels.
Breakfast is served daily from 7:00 to 11:00, which is generous for late risers, and guests are offered a complimentary glass of wine in the lobby. The hotel has no full restaurant, but the surrounding streets around City Hall Square and the Latin Quarter offer plenty of places to eat. Group bookings of six rooms or more are handled through a dedicated groups address.
Alexandra suits design enthusiasts, couples and anyone who wants a hotel with personality at a mid-range price in the centre. Rooms vary in size and layout, as is common in older buildings, so if you need more space, consider one of the suites. Because the hotel faces a main boulevard, ask for a quieter room if you are a light sleeper.
The location is very convenient. City Hall Square and the Rådhuspladsen metro station are a couple of minutes away, Tivoli Gardens and Copenhagen Central Station are a short walk south, and Strøget begins on the other side of the square. The Latin Quarter and the National Museum are also within easy walking distance, so you can see most of the city's main sights on foot.
If design is the reason for your stay, mention it when booking and ask which designer suites are available, since each one has its own character and furniture.
