Good to know
Dreamtime Southern X is an Aboriginal-owned and operated tour company run by Margret Campbell, a Dunghutti and Jirrinjah woman. Its best-known experience is The Rocks Aboriginal Dreaming Tour, a walk that introduces visitors to the living Aboriginal culture and heritage connected with Sydney Harbour and the land on which the city stands.
The tour is a 90-minute walkabout with an Aboriginal guide, starting from Cadman's Cottage on George Street in The Rocks. It runs daily from 10:30 to 12:00, except on Christmas Day and Good Friday. Along the way, the guide explains what the Dreaming is, where it comes from and how Aboriginal culture connects to the landscape, the skies and the waterways, including the harbour and its foreshore. You will learn about the Aboriginal custodians of the area and hear some words of the Gadigal language.
The experience is hands-on as well as informative. It includes a cultural acknowledgement using ochre, the traditional paint, and an opportunity to handle cultural objects and materials. The guide also links modern Sydney with the Aboriginal Dreaming, helping visitors see familiar landmarks in a different way.
The company offers further experiences, including Explore Sydney's Aboriginal Dreamtime, a mini coach trip with stops at several Aboriginal sites across the city, and cultural experiences covering ceremony, origin stories and oral traditions. Private, group and school tours can be arranged at other times, subject to availability and minimum numbers.
The tour suits school groups, families, solo travellers and anyone who wants to understand Sydney beyond its colonial history. It is particularly worthwhile early in a trip, as it gives context for many of the places you will visit later. The walk is gentle, and disabled access is available; contact the operator in advance to discuss needs.
Book ahead through the company's website or booking platform. Cadman's Cottage is on the western side of Circular Quay, a few minutes' walk from Circular Quay station and the ferry wharves, beside the Museum of Contemporary Art. After the tour, you can continue exploring The Rocks or visit the Aboriginal art in the museum next door. The company can be contacted by phone through the number listed on its website.
