Restaurant
Locavore NXT
The successor to Bali's famous Locavore, a tasting-menu restaurant in Lodtunduh with a rooftop food forest and fermentation lab, ranked on Asia's 50 Best Restaurants.
A Jalan Raya Ubud institution opened in 1992 by Janet DeNeefe and Ketut Suardana, serving Balinese and Mediterranean dishes from breakfast until late.
Good to know
Casa Luna has been part of life on Jalan Raya Ubud since 1992, when it was opened by Ketut Suardana and his wife Janet DeNeefe. DeNeefe is also the founder of the Ubud Writers and Readers Festival, the annual literary festival held every October, and the Ubud Food Festival. The restaurant reflects the same mix of Balinese roots and international outlook.
The menu combines Balinese cooking with Mediterranean dishes. On the Balinese side, look for nasi campur and curries made with spice pastes prepared in house, which give a good sense of the island's cooking. The Mediterranean side includes salads, mezze and grilled meats, served with Turkish bread baked on the premises, and there are crossover dishes such as a Balinese-style paella and nasi goreng with pork belly, as well as pumpkin ravioli and a grilled chicken salad. The coffee is a house blend of beans from Sumatra and Sulawesi.
The restaurant is open every day from 8am to 11pm, so it works for breakfast, a long lunch or dinner. Between 5pm and 7pm there is a daily happy hour with cocktail specials, and on Sunday evenings the Casa Luna Jazz Club brings live jazz with no cover charge, which makes it a good place to end a weekend day in Ubud. Reservations can be made by phone, WhatsApp or email.
The same family runs the Honeymoon Bakery on Jalan Bisma, which bakes croissants, sourdough, pastries, cakes and cookies fresh each morning in small batches and is known for a lime tart that often sells out by mid-afternoon. Casa Luna Cooking School, which teaches hands-on Balinese cooking classes, takes place in the gardens of the family's Honeymoon Guesthouse, also on Jalan Bisma, and is a natural follow-up for anyone who enjoys the food.
Casa Luna suits almost everyone, from families and solo travellers to couples looking for a relaxed dinner, and the long opening hours make it an easy fallback. Allow an hour to an hour and a half. It is on Jalan Raya Ubud, the same main street as Ubud Palace and the Ubud Art Market, so it fits easily into a day of sightseeing in the centre.
