Hotel
Çırağan Palace Kempinski Istanbul
A five-star Kempinski hotel built around a restored 19th-century Ottoman palace on the Bosphorus shore, with an infinity pool and 317 rooms.
A 33-room boutique hotel in a late 18th-century building on Banker Sokak between Galata and Karaköy, with individually decorated rooms and some sea views.
Good to know
Bankerhan occupies a historic building dating from the end of the 18th century, on a steep lane between the Galata Tower and the Karaköy waterfront. Its 33 rooms are individually decorated, with rain showers and air conditioning, and the room types include sea-view Comfort rooms and a Japanese-style double.
The location is the main appeal: Karaköy's cafés, Istanbul Modern and the ferries are downhill, while the Galata Tower and the cafés of Galata are a short climb up. It is a sensible mid-priced alternative to staying in Sultanahmet, which is one tram ride across the Galata Bridge. Ask for a sea-view room if views matter, and check the site for packages with airport transfers.
