Attraction
Hagia Sophia
Justinian's sixth-century domed basilica, now the Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque, with a separate visitor route through its upper galleries above the prayer hall.
Turkey's first museum of modern and contemporary art, reopened in 2023 in a Renzo Piano-designed building on the Karaköy waterfront.
Good to know
Opened in 2004 as Turkey's first museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art, Istanbul Modern moved in 2023 into a new five-storey building by Renzo Piano at the Galataport waterfront. The collection traces Turkish art from the early Republic to today, shown alongside changing international exhibitions, photography and film programmes.
Beyond the galleries there is a cinema, a library, a shop and a restaurant and café with Bosphorus views, so it is easy to spend a long afternoon here. Tickets are sold online through the museum's own ticketing site. It is a short walk from Karaköy tram stop, and pairs well with an evening in Karaköy or Galata.
