Good to know
Founded in the late 19th century with Osman Hamdi Bey as its first director, this complex below Topkapı holds around a million objects. The headline piece is the marble Alexander Sarcophagus from Sidon, carved with battle and hunting scenes, joined by other royal sarcophagi, statuary from across the former empire and tablets of the peace treaty between Ramesses II and Hattusili III.
Parts of the site are closed for a long-running restoration, including the Museum of the Ancient Orient, the Tiled Kiosk and several halls, so check what is open before you go. Tickets cost €15 and the museum opens daily. It is far quieter than its neighbours, and the shady garden makes a good break between sights.
