Why we recommend it

Conceived as a garden suburb for wealthy families, Park Güell never sold its plots and became a public park instead. The ticketed Monumental Zone holds the parts everyone recognises: the tiled dragon on the entrance stairway, the columned hall beneath the main terrace and the long, wave-shaped bench clad in broken-tile mosaic.

Beyond the paid area, wooded paths and viaducts climb the slope with good views and far fewer people. Tickets must be bought online before you go, and the combined option adds the Casa del Guarda and the Gaudí House Museum. The park sits on a steep hill; arriving from Vallcarca metro, outdoor escalators take some of the strain out of the climb. The park can close in bad weather, so check the website on the day.
