1. Paradiso

View details — ParadisoAmsterdam's nightlife starts early and covers every mood. The city's traditional bruin cafés, or brown cafés, are the place to begin: Café Hoppe on the Spui has served drinks since 1670, and the small tasting room of Wynand Fockink in an alley behind Dam Square keeps alive the custom of bowing to take the first sip of a brimming glass of jenever. For local beer, Café Struis at Brouwerij 't IJ, beneath the De Gooyer windmill, pours the brewery's own range on a heated terrace.
Live music is a major draw. Paradiso, in a former church near Leidseplein, and the Melkweg, in a former milk factory a minute away, host international artists and club nights most evenings, and many shows sell out, so buy tickets early and check whether a venue membership is needed. For cocktails with a view, LuminAir on the 11th floor of a hotel by Central Station offers DJs and city panoramas. Club nights are generally for over-18s, carry ID, and remember that public transport runs late but less frequently after midnight, with night buses filling the gaps. Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein are the busiest nightlife hubs.
