Why we recommend it

Le Plongeoir has one of the most unusual settings of any restaurant on the Riviera. It stands on a rock in the sea beside the coast road east of the port, under the old diving board that gives it its name, and its terraces seem to float above the water.

The site has a long history. At the end of the nineteenth century the rock was used as the base for a fishing boat, and during the Belle Epoque guests came to eat, drink cocktails and take tea a little over six metres above the waves. The diving platform, still standing above the restaurant, has become one of the most recognisable sights of the Nice coastline.

The kitchen, led by chef Marc Dussoullier, serves bright Mediterranean cooking that changes with the seasons and the market, which the restaurant describes as cuisine solaire. The menu mixes traditional French and Provençal dishes with home-made preparations, and there are vegetarian and gluten-free options. In summer, the Le Vivier lounge bar adds cocktails, wines and dishes to share; it closes for the season and is due to reopen in May 2027.

The restaurant is seasonal, generally opening from March to mid-November, and serves continuously from lunchtime into the evening during the season. Book ahead through the website, especially for sunset tables in summer, when the terraces are in high demand. It is accessible for wheelchair users, and the various spaces, including an enclosed heated area on the rock, can be hired for groups and events. There is no parking for visitors, so arrive on foot or by taxi.

Le Plongeoir suits couples, friends and anyone celebrating something with a view. Families are welcome, but keep an eye on children near the edges. Allow at least two hours to make the most of the setting, and bring a light jacket in spring and autumn, as evenings by the water can be cool.

The restaurant is on Boulevard Franck Pilatte, the coast road that runs from the port towards Mont Boron and Villefranche. From the port it is a pleasant walk of a few minutes along the water, and you can continue to Mont Boron afterwards.
