Why we recommend it

Kødbyens Fiskebar opened in 2009 in Kødbyen, Copenhagen's Meatpacking District, and helped to turn the former industrial quarter into one of the city's most popular areas for eating and drinking. It was founded by Anders Selmer and Bagge Algreen-Ussing in a white-clinkered former meat hall, and within its first year it received a Michelin Bib Gourmand, the guide's award for good quality, good value cooking. It has stayed in the Michelin Guide ever since.

The space was designed by Space Copenhagen, who kept the worn walls and industrial details, reused old doors as bar panels and placed a large cylindrical aquarium in the middle of the room. A concrete bull sculpture from 1933 by Einar Utzon-Frank still watches over the entrance, a reminder of the building's past. The result is relaxed and lively rather than formal.

The restaurant describes its offer simply as fresh seafood, easy-drinking wines and cocktails. Oysters and drinks are served all day, so it works for a quick plate of oysters and a glass of wine as well as a full meal of fish and shellfish dishes. The kitchen has been led for many years by the British chef Jamie Lee, who previously cooked in London and Australia.

Fiskebaren suits couples, groups of friends and anyone who wants good seafood without a long tasting menu. It is open every day from 11:30, until midnight from Sunday to Thursday and until 01:00 on Friday and Saturday. The kitchen serves lunch from 11:30 to 14:30 and dinner from 17:30 to 23:00. Book a table for dinner, especially at weekends, through the link on the restaurant's website, or try for a seat at the bar.

Flæsketorvet is in the heart of Kødbyen, a few minutes' walk from Copenhagen Central Station and Dybbølsbro station. The surrounding streets are full of restaurants, bars and clubs, including Paté Paté and Mother, so it is an easy place to start or finish a night out in Vesterbro.

The founders also took over the neighbouring bar, Mesteren & Lærlingen, which is handy for a drink before or after dinner. Before Jamie Lee, the kitchen was led by the Scottish chef Thomas Garland.
