Best Attractions in Copenhagen (2026)

Copenhagen's main sights are concentrated in a compact old town, so you can see a great deal on foot in a couple of days. The royal story runs through Rosenborg Castle, with the crown jewels in its treasury, Amalienborg, where the changing of the guard takes place at noon, and Christiansborg Palace on Slotsholmen, where the parliament, the royal reception rooms and medieval ruins share one building. For art and history, the National Museum, the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek and SMK, the National Gallery of Denmark, each deserve two to three hours.

Plan your days by area. Rosenborg, SMK and the Round Tower sit close together around Nørreport, Christiansborg and the National Museum pair naturally near Strøget, and Tivoli and the Glyptotek face each other by the Central Station. Amalienborg leads on to the harbourfront walk to the Little Mermaid, while the Church of Our Saviour in Christianshavn offers the city's most dramatic climb, with booking recommended. The Royal Palace Pass covers Rosenborg, Amalienborg and Christiansborg over three days, and buying tickets online usually saves a little. Opening hours change with the seasons at many sights, and some close on Mondays in winter, so check before you go and start early to avoid the summer crowds.
