Why we recommend it

teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi opened on 18 April 2025 in the Saadiyat Cultural District, bringing the Tokyo-based art collective teamLab to the UAE capital. The project is a partnership between the Department of Culture and Tourism Abu Dhabi, Miral and teamLab, and it is operated by Miral Experiences. At around 17,000 square metres, it is a large, purpose-built space where you walk through and interact with the art rather than look at it on a wall.

The building itself was designed by teamLab Architects with the Abu Dhabi practice MZ Architects, and it was conceived so that the artworks can evolve freely inside it. teamLab calls the idea behind the venue Environmental Phenomena: the works exist only because their environment creates them, and they keep changing with conditions and with the people moving through them. The collective's own description is that no two visits are the same.

Two works give a sense of what to expect. In Massless Suns and Dark Suns, spheres of light and darkness seem solid yet cannot be grasped; touch a sphere of light and it glows, sending a ripple of light through the spheres around it. Levitation Void features a void that hovers in the centre of its space and, when pushed, moves or falls before slowly rising back into place. Much of the pleasure comes from discovering how each space reacts to you.

It suits a wide range of visitors. Children usually love the interactive elements, couples and friends find it a memorable outing, and anyone who enjoys photography will have plenty to work with. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that are easy to move in. Book a timed ticket online through the official website and check opening hours before you go, as weekends and holidays can be busy. Allow around two hours to explore without rushing.

Because it is indoors, it is also a good option in the hottest months or in the evening after a day outside. The venue sits in the Saadiyat Cultural District, near Louvre Abu Dhabi, Manarat Al Saadiyat and the newer museums on the island, so it is easy to pair with a museum in the morning and teamLab in the afternoon or evening. Public bus route 94 serves the Cultural District, and taxis can drop off nearby.
