Colombo Travel Guide: Things to Do, Attractions & Where to Eat

There are more things to do in Colombo than most travellers expect from a city they often treat as a stopover. Sri Lanka's commercial capital stretches along the west coast, from the colonial Fort and the crowded market streets of Pettah to the leafy avenues of Cinnamon Gardens, where the National Museum, Viharamahadevi Park and Independence Memorial Hall stand within a short ride of each other. Around Beira Lake you will find Gangaramaya Temple, Geoffrey Bawa's Seema Malakaya pavilion and the 351.5-metre Lotus Tower, while Galle Face Green and the Mount Lavinia beach give the city its seaside side.

The food scene runs from rice and curry and prawn feasts to chef Dharshan Munidasa's Ministry of Crab and Nihonbashi, with garden cafés, tea lounges and rooftop bars filling the gaps. Two to three days is enough to see the main sights, walk Fort and Pettah, tour Bawa's house and enjoy a few long dinners. Add a day or two for trips to Bentota, Galle or Kandy.

Country
Sri Lanka
Currency
Sri Lankan rupee (LKR); cards are accepted in hotels and most restaurants, but carry cash for markets, tuk-tuks and small cafés

Tuk-tuks and ride-hailing apps such as PickMe and Uber are the easiest options; trains on the Coastal Line run from Colombo Fort to Mount Lavinia and beyond

The drier months on the west coast, roughly December to March, are the most comfortable; on poya (full moon) days some restaurants and markets close and alcohol sales are restricted
