Good to know
The Children's Museum Jordan is a non-profit, hands-on museum launched in 2007 under the patronage of Queen Rania. It covers some 8,000 square metres and holds more than 180 interactive exhibits, and it has welcomed more than two and a half million visitors since it opened. For families travelling with young children, it is the most useful indoor attraction in Amman.
The exhibits are grouped into themed zones that encourage children to touch, build and experiment. They include Air and Flight, Stars and Space, Light and Optics, Electricity and Magnets, Machines, Water and Energy, the Human Body and Ancient Times, along with Biodiversity in Jordan. Role-play areas such as a police station, a bank, a garage and a supermarket are popular with younger children, and the Tinkering Studio and Art Studio offer more creative activities. Toddlers under five have their own spaces, including Tiny Tots Space for ages one to five.
Beyond the galleries there is a climbing wall, a library of more than 5,000 books, an outdoor Secret Garden, a museum shop and a restaurant run by Al Karma Kitchen. Food and drink are only allowed in the restaurant, children must be accompanied by an adult at all times and running is not permitted in the halls. Tickets are sold per person, with a separate rate for visitors who are not resident in Jordan, and children under one go free.
Allow at least two to three hours, and longer with energetic children. Hours change between the winter season, from September to May, and the summer months, and they are different again during Ramadan; the museum is closed on Tuesdays in winter. Check the visit page on the website before you go, and look out for the monthly open days, held on the first Saturday of each month, and special events. A Mobile Children's Museum also tours schools and public venues across Jordan.
The museum is on King Abdullah II Street in west Amman, next to the Royal Automobile Museum, so the two combine easily. Take a taxi or ride-hailing car, as it is some distance from Downtown and Jabal Amman.
