View details — Amber FortJaipur's sights fall into two groups. In the walled Pink City, City Palace, Jantar Mantar and Hawa Mahal stand within a few minutes' walk of each other, so they make a natural half-day route. City Palace opens daily from 09:30 to 18:30, and an early start beats both the heat and the crowds at Hawa Mahal, whose entrance is at the back of the building rather than on the main road. Jantar Mantar has little shade, so it is best before late morning or later in the afternoon, and a guide helps make sense of its instruments.
The second group lies in the hills north of the city. Amber Fort is about 11 km from the centre, and Jaigarh Fort stands directly above it, linked by walls and passages, so many visitors see both in one morning and stop at Jal Mahal on Man Sagar Lake on the way back. Nahargarh Fort, on the ridge above the old city, is the classic sunset viewpoint. Back in town, the Albert Hall Museum in Ram Niwas Garden is a good choice for a hot afternoon, and Birla Mandir is pleasant in the evening. Galtaji, the temple complex in a gorge east of the city, needs a separate half-day. Dress modestly for temples and carry water everywhere.
