Good to know
SP Free Walking Tour describes itself as the official free walking tour of São Paulo, and for many first-time visitors it is the easiest way to get to grips with a huge city. The tours follow a tips-only model that the company calls a collaborative economy: there is no fixed price, and you pay the guide what you think the tour was worth at the end. The guides are local, professional guides, and tours run in both English and Portuguese.
There are three main routes. The Old Downtown tour covers the historic centre, the Vila Madalena tour explores the west-side neighbourhood that is also home to Beco do Batman, and the Paulista Ave tour follows the avenue that is home to MASP and several cultural centres. Together they give a good overview of three very different sides of São Paulo.
The schedule is generous for English speakers. The Old Downtown tour runs in English on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 11:00, the Vila Madalena tour on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 11:00, and the Paulista Ave tour on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays at 15:30. Portuguese tours run on Saturdays and Sundays. Booking is done online through Eventbrite, with a separate link for each tour and language, and you receive the meeting details when you reserve.
A good plan is to take the Old Downtown tour early in your stay, as it gives context for the rest of the city, and then add Vila Madalena or Paulista on another day. On Sundays, Avenida Paulista is closed to cars, which makes the afternoon Paulista tour particularly pleasant. Wear comfortable shoes, bring water and sun protection, and keep valuables out of sight in busy areas.
The tours suit solo travellers, couples, students and anyone on a budget, as well as visitors who simply like to learn from a local. The company also offers private tours, audio tours and food tours through linked sites, which are useful if you want a more tailored experience or prefer to explore at your own pace. Remember to bring cash or another way to tip at the end.
They are tips-based: there is no fixed price and you tip the guide what you think the tour was worth.
