Why we recommend it

Mount Lavinia is Colombo's beach suburb, a stretch of sand on the southern edge of the city. Its name comes from one of the city's best-known love stories. In 1806 Governor Sir Thomas Maitland built a residence at Galkissa, as the area was then called, and he reportedly fell for Lovina Aponsuwa, a local dancer. He named the mansion Mount Lavinia House, and the village that grew up around it took its name from her. The mansion became a hotel in 1877, after a railway line was built along the coast, and it still operates as the Mount Lavinia Hotel.

The beach has long been described as Sri Lanka's main sea-bathing spot, and it is famous for its sunsets. The sea is the main thing to be careful about: swimming is only safe at certain times of year, and the water can be rough with a strong undertow, so check conditions locally and stay out of the water when it looks wild. For many visitors the real pleasure is walking along the sand in the late afternoon and staying on for dinner.

Eating by the sea is easy. Loon Tao, a beachside Chinese seafood restaurant, reopened in 2025 under new management after a long closure, with seating for 350, live music every evening from 6pm and a Sunday brunch. The Mount Lavinia Hotel's beachside Seafood Cove lets diners choose fresh seafood and how it is cooked, with tables on the sand.

Getting here is part of the fun. Mount Lavinia station is on the Coastal Line about 14 kilometres from Colombo Fort, and the train runs right along the shore, although few express services stop here, so check timetables. A tuk-tuk or taxi down Galle Road is the alternative, with journey times that depend on traffic. Allow at least half a day, timed so that you are on the beach for sunset.

The beach suits couples, families and anyone wanting a break from the city centre. Dehiwala, with the National Zoological Gardens, is the next suburb to the north, so a family day could combine the zoo in the morning with the beach and dinner later on.
