Hotel
Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor
Siem Reap's grand hotel since 1932, an Art Deco landmark with a pool, spa, Cambodian restaurant and the celebrated Elephant Bar.
Aman's intimate 24-suite retreat in a 1960s New Khmer building that once hosted King Sihanouk's guests, with private temple tours and plunge-pool suites.
Good to know
Amansara is the most exclusive address in Siem Reap, and one of the smallest. The building was once a residence for guests of King Norodom Sihanouk, and Aman describes it as a 1960s masterpiece of New Khmer architecture, the modernist style that flourished in Cambodia in that decade. Transformed into a resort, it now offers just 24 contemporary suites, many with private plunge pools, which gives it the feel of a private house rather than a hotel.
The curvilinear pool at the centre of the property is one of its signatures and a peaceful place to spend the afternoon between temple visits. A holistic spa offers treatments to ease tired legs after long days of walking and climbing, and the circular dining room gives meals a sense of occasion. Aman also has a Khmer Village House within the Angkor park, where guests can enjoy a meal close to the temples.
Experiences are tailored to each guest. The resort arranges tours of Angkor Archaeological Park, including private visits to Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm and the Bayon, as well as excursions by bicycle to jungle temples and jeep trips into the countryside. Staff can plan each day around your interests, the heat and the crowds, which makes the temples feel very different from a standard tour.
Amansara suits couples, honeymooners and discerning travellers who value privacy, space and highly personal service. It is less suited to those on a budget or anyone who wants a lively hotel scene. With so few suites, it books up early in the high season, so reserve well ahead, especially for dates between November and March.
The resort is on the Road to Angkor, convenient for trips to the temples while still within easy reach of the town centre. Aman notes that it is about a 60-minute drive from Siem Reap Angkor International Airport, so plan your arrival time accordingly and ask the resort to arrange a transfer. Contact the resort by phone or through the Aman website for reservations and enquiries. Share your interests and fitness level when you book, so that the team can plan temple days, meals at the Khmer Village House and any countryside excursions in advance.
