Hotel
Raffles Grand Hotel d’Angkor
Siem Reap's grand hotel since 1932, an Art Deco landmark with a pool, spa, Cambodian restaurant and the celebrated Elephant Bar.
A 36-room riverside boutique hotel with two pools, a spa and a Khmer restaurant, known for its plastic-free policy and the Refill Not Landfill campaign.
Good to know
Jaya House River Park is a 36-room boutique hotel beside the Siem Reap River that has built a strong reputation for both comfort and sustainability. It is plastic-free, and Christian de Boer of Jaya House Hotels started the Refill Not Landfill campaign in 2016 with Dean McLachlan of JustRide Motorbike Adventures, with the aim of cutting the use of single-use plastic bottles and other plastic waste. The hotel also supports tree planting through its Trees for Life initiative, a nutritional book drive and plant-based food options.
The rooms are designed for relaxation after long days at the temples. Every one has either a balcony or direct access to the garden and pool, and the hotel provides air conditioning, complimentary wifi and natural skincare from Jaya Organics. There are two swimming pools, which means there is usually a quiet spot to read or swim, and the spa offers treatments to ease the aches of temple climbing.
Food is served all day at Trorkuon Khmer Restaurant, which is open daily and offers Khmer and Western dishes along with lighter, healthier options. It is vegan-friendly, a useful point for plant-based travellers. Eating in is easy, but the town's restaurants are also close at hand.
The hotel suits couples, families and travellers who want a calm, well-run base with a conscience. Its size means staff can offer personal service, and it is particularly good for guests who care about the environmental footprint of their trip. A sensible plan is to visit the temples early, return for a swim and lunch, and head out again for sunset.
Jaya House River Park stands on River Road in Treang Village, around six minutes by tuk-tuk from the town centre in the direction of Angkor Wat, with the Angkor National Museum nearby. The hotel offers a complimentary airport pick-up for bookings of two nights or more; the new Siem Reap Angkor International Airport is about an hour away by car. Contact the hotel by phone or email to book or ask about transfers. Note that one-night stays do not qualify for the free pick-up, so longer bookings offer better value.
