Why we recommend it

Cirrus 9 is the rooftop bar of The Oberoi, New Delhi, and one of the best places in the city to watch the sun go down with a drink in hand. From its open-air terrace the views stretch across New Delhi, over the green fairways of the Delhi Golf Course and towards Humayun's Tomb, the UNESCO-listed Mughal garden tomb. It is at its best under the open sky on a clear evening.

The drinks are handcrafted cocktails, and the signature Skyline Cocktail Menu features nine drinks inspired by the city's landmarks, so you can look out over the monuments and drink something inspired by them. The food is an eclectic international menu, and at weekends a brunch runs from 12.30pm to 3.30pm, with vegetarian, fish and meat dishes and both indoor and outdoor seating.

The bar opens from 5pm to 1am. The cooler months from October to March are the most comfortable time for the terrace, and in the hot season evenings are much more pleasant than late afternoons. Reserve through the request form on the hotel website, and call for groups of more than eight or for same-day bookings. On cooler winter nights, bring a light layer, as the terrace is open to the sky.

There is a dress code: no bedroom slippers or flip-flops, and men must wear full-length trousers and closed shoes. Guests under 25 may visit until 8pm, but alcohol is not served to anyone under 25 under Delhi's excise rules, so carry ID.

Cirrus 9 suits couples, friends celebrating a special occasion and anyone who wants a panoramic view of the city, and it is a good way to see The Oberoi without staying. Prices are at the luxury hotel level. If you want to be outside for sunset, say so when you book and arrive a little early.

The Oberoi stands on Dr. Zakir Hussain Marg, close to Humayun's Tomb, Sunder Nursery and Nizamuddin, so a sunset drink here is a natural way to end a day of sightseeing in the area. Khan Market and Lodhi Garden are a short drive away for dinner afterwards.
