Hotel
The Peninsula Hong Kong
Hong Kong's grande dame, opened on Salisbury Road in 1928, famous for afternoon tea in The Lobby, its green Rolls-Royce fleet and the Philippe Starck-designed Felix.
A 66-room Wan Chai boutique hotel whose bottle-green and brass interiors are inspired by the Star Ferry, with the coastal Italian restaurant Osteria Marzia downstairs.
Good to know
The Fleming is a boutique hotel on Fleming Road in Wan Chai, a district on Hong Kong Island between Central and Causeway Bay. Its interiors, by the local studio A Work of Substance, are inspired by the Star Ferry and by the mood of 1960s Hong Kong. Expect a palette of bottle green and ivory, brass details, porthole-style mirrors, room doors that resemble ship cabins and do not disturb signs modelled on a ship's engine order telegraph.
There are 66 rooms, ranging from cosy to extra large, and the larger categories are often more spacious than a typical Hong Kong flat. Rooms come with Sealy mattresses, Apple TVs and custom stationery, and the bathrooms are stocked with Shen Nong products based on Chinese apothecary principles. The attention to detail is a big part of the appeal.
On the ground floor, Osteria Marzia serves coastal Italian food and acts as the hotel's social hub. It is worth booking a table for dinner. Tatler Asia named The Fleming among its Best Boutique Hotels for 2026.
The hotel suits couples, solo travellers and design lovers who want character and a sense of place rather than the facilities of a large hotel. Prices sit between mid-range and upscale, and the location offers good value for Hong Kong Island.
As with many boutique hotels, availability is limited, so it is best to book early if you want one of the larger room types, which are the ones most likely to suit couples on a longer stay. If you are arriving from the airport, a taxi takes you directly to the door, while the MTR is the cheaper option if you are travelling light.
Wan Chai is a practical base between Central and Causeway Bay and is well connected by MTR. Kam's Roast Goose on Hennessy Road is within reach for a classic roast meat lunch, and the Star Ferry from Wan Chai Pier crosses the harbour to Tsim Sha Tsui, fitting given the hotel's design. Central and Causeway Bay are a short ride in either direction. Contact the hotel by phone or through its website to book.
