Why we recommend it

Tuve is a design hotel on Tsing Fung Street in Tin Hau, just east of Causeway Bay. It sits behind an anonymous facade that gives little away, a deliberate contrast with the busy streets around it. Inside, the look is minimalist and modernist, with concrete, stone and metal surfaces and raw textures throughout. It is one of the most distinctive small hotels in the city for anyone interested in contemporary design.

There are 66 rooms. Bathrooms are stocked with Le Labo products, and the minibars include hard-to-find items rather than the usual selection.

Practical details are straightforward. The front desk and concierge are open around the clock, Wi-Fi is free throughout, and the whole hotel is non-smoking. Luggage storage is available, which is useful if you have an early arrival or late flight. Check-in is from 2pm and check-out by noon. There is no parking and pets are not allowed. Children of any age are welcome, and children up to two stay free in a cot, though cots and extra beds must be requested and confirmed in advance. Credit cards are accepted.

Tuve suits couples, solo travellers and design lovers who want somewhere quiet and different. Prices are in the upper mid-range for Hong Kong.

Because the hotel is small, the best room types can sell out early, so book ahead for weekends and holidays. Tuve has no restaurant listed among its facilities, which is not a drawback given the number of places to eat nearby, but it does mean breakfast is something to plan for. A taxi from the airport takes you to the door, and the MTR is a cheaper option if you are travelling light. If you are sensitive to noise, ask for a room on a higher floor when you check in. Families should remember to request cots or extra beds in advance, as the hotel needs to confirm them before arrival.

The Michelin Guide places Tuve on the edge of Causeway Bay, with neighbourhood restaurants such as Shek Kee Kitchen and Sister Wah close by, and Tin Hau MTR station connects with Wan Chai, Admiralty and Central. Book through the hotel's website for current rates.
