Hotel
The Peninsula Hong Kong
Hong Kong's grande dame, opened on Salisbury Road in 1928, famous for afternoon tea in The Lobby, its green Rolls-Royce fleet and the Philippe Starck-designed Felix.
A calm, residential-style luxury hotel designed by André Fu on the upper floors of Pacific Place in Admiralty, with 117 rooms and a top-ten World's 50 Best Hotels ranking.
Good to know
The Upper House opened on 2 October 2009 above Pacific Place in Admiralty. It is run by Swire Hotels, part of the Swire group, and was designed by André Fu, who set out to create a small luxury hotel that feels like a private residence rather than a grand hotel. It occupies floors 38 to 49 of a tower that also houses the JW Marriott Hotel Hong Kong.
With 117 rooms, the hotel is small by Hong Kong luxury standards, which is part of its appeal. All the rooms are on high floors of the tower, and there are two restaurants on site.
The Upper House has consistently featured among the world's leading hotels, placing in the top ten of The World's 50 Best Hotels every year from 2023 to 2025. It is rated as a five-star luxury hotel and has hosted well-known guests from the worlds of fashion and design, including Christian Louboutin and Tom Dixon.
It suits couples, business travellers and anyone who prefers a calm, small hotel to a large, busy one. It is less suited to families who want extensive facilities for children. Prices are high, but the setting and service match.
Because the hotel has relatively few rooms, availability can be limited around major events, trade fairs and public holidays, so plan early if your dates are fixed. When booking, compare room categories and ask about the view, as the outlook differs depending on which side of the tower the room faces. If you are arriving from the airport, a taxi to Admiralty is straightforward, and public transport is a cheaper alternative if you are travelling light.
The location is convenient. Pacific Place is a shopping centre close to Admiralty MTR station, so it is easy to get around the city. Hong Kong Park, with its aviary and the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware, is reached through Pacific Place, and the Peak Tram terminus on Garden Road is a short walk beyond. Central's restaurants and bars are close by, and Wan Chai is a short ride east. Book well ahead for weekends, and check the hotel's website for current offers and dining reservations.
