Why we recommend it

Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong opened in 1963 on Connaught Road in the heart of Central, and it has been one of the city's leading hotels ever since. At 26 storeys it was the tallest building in Hong Kong when it opened, and it was the first hotel in the city to have direct-dial telephones and the first in Asia to put a bath in every guest room. It was originally to be called the Queen's Hotel, opened as The Mandarin and took its current name in 1988.

The hotel had a major renovation in 2005 and 2006 and today has around 500 rooms, including 67 suites. It continues to collect awards: it was named the best hotel in Hong Kong and Macau in the Condé Nast Traveller Readers' Choice Awards 2025, holds a Michelin Key and appears in The World's 50 Best Hotels 2026 extended list at number 59.

Its restaurants and bars are among the hotel's strengths. Man Wah serves classic Cantonese cooking, the Captain's Bar is known for classic cocktails, and the Clipper Lounge serves an international buffet. Other options include the Mandarin Grill + Bar, Terrace Boulud for rooftop French dining, the whisky bar The Thistle and The Jade, the Japanese izakaya The Aubrey, the British-themed The Chinnery and the Blake Foyer tea salon. The hotel also runs the Mandarin Oriental Cake Shop and The Mandarin Club.

The hotel highlights its spa as a key feature, and there is also a salon and The Mandarin Barber. The hotel says it offers step-free access, lifts and accessible guest rooms, and asks guests to contact it before arrival to arrange specific needs.

Central is easy to reach from the airport by taxi or public transport, and the hotel can advise on transfers when you book.

Mandarin Oriental suits business travellers, couples and anyone who wants to stay at the centre of Hong Kong Island. The Star Ferry piers, the Peak Tram terminus and the bars of Central are all within easy reach, and City Hall Maxim's Palace is nearby for dim sum. Reservations can be made by phone or by email through the addresses published on the hotel's website.
