Thing to do
Old Medina of Casablanca
A walk through the walled old town rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake, with souks along the ramparts, shrines, the old mellah and the Sqala bastion.
A large seafront shopping centre at the end of the Corniche, opened in 2011, with more than 350 stores, the Aquadream aquarium, a musical fountain and an ice rink.
Good to know
The Morocco Mall is far more than a place to buy clothes. Opened on 1 December 2011 at the western end of the Ain Diab Corniche, it was designed by the London-based firm Design International and has more than 350 stores. For many Casablanca families it is a day out in its own right, and for visitors it is a useful option on a hot afternoon or a rainy day.
The best-known attraction is Aquadream, a cylindrical aquarium holding around a million litres of water and more than 40 species of fish. A lift runs through the middle of the tank, giving a 360-degree view of the fish as you rise and descend. Other attractions include a musical fountain, the Adventureland indoor amusement area, an ice rink and the Univers 6D cinema experience. Each attraction has its own tickets and times, so check the mall's website for current details.
The stores cover fashion and many other categories, and there are plenty of restaurants and cafés. This is not the place for traditional crafts; head to the Habous quarter or the medina for those. It is, however, convenient for practical purchases such as clothing or travel essentials, and its air-conditioned walkways are a welcome escape on a hot afternoon. If you are travelling with teenagers, the mix of shops, food and entertainment under one roof can make it an easy compromise between sightseeing and free time.
The mall suits families with children, shoppers and anyone needing a break from the heat or the city. Allow two hours for a look around and one or two attractions, or half a day if your children want to try everything. The mall opens daily from 10:00, closing at 21:00 from Sunday to Thursday and at 22:00 on Friday and Saturday, with restaurants staying open an hour later. Weekends, especially Saturday evenings, are busy.
The mall sits on the corner of Boulevard de la Corniche and Boulevard de l'Océan, a taxi ride west of the city centre. It combines naturally with an afternoon or evening on the Ain Diab Corniche, where you can walk along the promenade and watch the sunset over the Atlantic before dinner at one of the seafront restaurants.
Sunday to Thursday 10:00 to 21:00, and Friday and Saturday 10:00 to 22:00, with restaurants open an hour later.
