Café
Conditori La Glace
Copenhagen's classic patisserie, founded in 1870 just off Strøget, serving traditional Danish layer cakes such as the Sportskage in an old-fashioned tea room.
A small neighbourhood bakery in Østerbro, founded by former Noma cook Emil Glaser and famous for its cardamom rolls, croissants and sourdough bread.
Good to know
Juno the Bakery is a small bakery in a quiet corner of Østerbro, on the ground floor of a five-storey residential building on Århusgade. It has been serving Copenhagen since 2018, according to the bakery, and it was founded by Emil Glaser, a former cook at Noma. Glaser grew up with cardamom rolls during his childhood in Sweden and noticed they were missing from Copenhagen bakeries, so he made them a centrepiece of the menu. The bakery's cardamom rolls have since become one of the best-known pastries in the city.
Besides the cardamom rolls, Juno bakes croissants, including a pistachio croissant, sourdough bread, buns and a changing range of cakes and pastries. The bakery's own list includes Danish butter cookies with cardamom, hindbærsnitter (raspberry slices), lemon cake and an apple cream bun. The bakery says it is guided by a love of quality, craft and honesty, and it uses carefully selected organic ingredients.
Juno is a neighbourhood bakery rather than a café, with limited space, so most customers take their pastries away. It suits early risers, pastry lovers and anyone exploring Østerbro. Weekend mornings are the busiest time, and popular items can sell out, so arrive early for the full choice. The bakery also sells its Danish butter cookies online.
Juno is closed on Mondays. From Tuesday to Saturday it is open from 7:30 to 18:00, and on Sunday from 7:30 to 16:00. Table reservations and wholesale enquiries go through the bakery's shop email address.
Århusgade is in the residential part of Østerbro, north of the city centre, close to the Østerbro shopping streets and within reach of Fælledparken and the harbour at Nordhavn. The easiest way to get there from the centre is by bike, bus or the metro to Nordhavn or Østerport followed by a short walk. Combine a visit with a walk in Fælledparken or a trip out to Nordhavn's new harbour district. If you are dining at Geranium later the same day, Juno is in the same part of the city.
If you want to try several things, share them: a cardamom roll and a croissant between two people is a good way to taste the bakery's range without overdoing it.
