Why we recommend it

Pub 28 is a small neighbourhood pub on Shagaret El Dor Street in the centre of Zamalek, and it has been a fixture of the island's evening life for many years. It is one of the more relaxed and affordable places to drink in Zamalek, a world away from the dressed-up rooftop bars along the Nile, and it attracts a loyal mix of Cairene regulars, expatriates and visitors staying nearby.

The room is small, cosy and dimly lit, and it fills up quickly in the evenings. The drink most people mention is the sangria, which local guides describe as among the best in the city. Beer, wine and spirits are also served, and the food menu covers Egyptian mezze and simple bar dishes, which makes it a good place to eat while you drink. As at many bars in Zamalek, you can bring your own bottle of spirits or wine for a corkage fee.

Pub 28 suits solo travellers, groups of friends and anyone who wants a straightforward drink in a friendly setting. It is not a place for a quiet conversation at peak times: it can be crowded, loud and smoky, which some find part of its character and others may prefer to avoid. Dress is casual, and there is no need to dress up. Prices are moderate compared with the hotel bars.

There is no booking system to speak of, so arrive early in the evening if you want a table, especially on Thursday and Friday nights. Allow an hour or two. Carry cash just in case, and check opening times locally, as they are not officially published. Alcohol is served only to adults, and staff may ask for identification.

The pub is on Shagaret El Dor Street, almost opposite Mandarine Koueider, close to 26th of July Street and a short walk from Simonds and Zooba. The Cairo Marriott and Pier 88 are about ten minutes away on foot, and Crimson's rooftop is a short walk west towards the river. Taxis and ride-hailing cars are easy to find on 26th of July Street. Because it is so central, Pub 28 also works well as a first stop before dinner elsewhere on the island, or as a relaxed nightcap after a meal at Abou El Sid or Zooba. Visitors new to the city often find it an easy, friendly introduction to Zamalek's evening life.
