Good to know
Crimson Bar & Grill is a rooftop restaurant and bar on a quiet Nile-facing street on the western side of Zamalek, set on top of the Riverside building. Its open terrace looks out over the river towards Agouza, and it has long been one of the island's most popular places for a stylish evening drink. It works as both a restaurant and a bar, so you can come for a full dinner or simply for cocktails as the sun goes down.
The cocktail list is creative and changes over time, and there is a full choice of wine, beer and spirits. The kitchen focuses on grills and international dishes, and over the years the menu has been known for items such as Chateaubriand steak and grilled sea bass, with desserts such as apple strudel. Sharing plates make it easy to graze while you drink. As with many Zamalek bars, you can bring your own wine or spirits for a corkage fee.
Crimson suits couples, groups of friends and anyone celebrating a special occasion. It has a smart, adult atmosphere, and the clientele is a mix of well-heeled Cairenes, expatriates and visitors. Prices are relatively high by local standards, so it is best treated as a special night out rather than a casual pub. Smart casual dress is appropriate, and the terrace can be cool on winter evenings, so bring a layer between December and February.
Reservations are recommended, especially at weekends and for tables at the terrace edge with the clearest river view. Sunset is the most popular time to arrive. Allow two hours or more for dinner and drinks. Check current opening times and menus through the bar's social media before you go, as hours can change seasonally.
The building is on Kamal El Tawil Street, a short walk from 26th of July Street and the bridges to Agouza and Mohandessin. Cairo Jazz Club is a few minutes away by taxi across the river, and Pub 28 and the cafés of central Zamalek are close by if you want to continue the evening. Taxis and ride-hailing cars are easy to find in the neighbourhood late at night.
