Good to know
Makan, the Egyptian Center for Culture and Art, is a small, independent venue in an old building on Saad Zaghloul Street in the Mounira district, close to Downtown. It was founded to record, preserve and present the traditional music of Egypt as a living art, and its work bridges Mediterranean and sub-Saharan African traditions. In 2005 the centre received the Lois Ibsen al-Faruqi Prize from the Society for Ethnomusicology for its work.
The venue is best known for its zar performances by Mazaher, which the centre describes as Egypt's leading zar ensemble. Zar is a ritual music tradition associated with healing, led by women singers and drummers, and it has largely disappeared from everyday life in Cairo. Hearing it here, with hypnotic rhythms, frame drums and the lyre-like tambourah, is a rare experience. Other evenings feature folk music, classical Egyptian forms and experimental fusions by local musicians, often with traditional tea served to the audience.
Makan suits curious travellers, music lovers and anyone interested in culture beyond the monuments. The space is small and intimate, with simple seating close to the performers, so the atmosphere is very different from a concert hall. It is not a bar, and alcohol is not the focus, which makes it suitable for those who prefer an alcohol-free evening out. Performances are generally suitable for older children with an interest in music.
According to a September 2025 report, performances took place on Sunday and Wednesday evenings from 19:00 to 23:00, but schedules change, so check the centre's website or social media before going. Tickets are usually paid in cash at the door. Arrive early, as seating is limited, and be respectful during the performance, as zar has spiritual significance for the musicians.
The centre is on Saad Zaghloul Street near the government buildings of El Dawaween, a short walk from Saad Zaghloul metro station and around 15 minutes on foot from Tahrir Square. A taxi or ride-hailing car is the easiest way to arrive in the evening. Downtown's cafés and bars are close by for a drink or late dinner afterwards. For many visitors an evening at Makan is one of the most memorable experiences of a trip to Cairo, precisely because it offers something that cannot be found at the main sights. Photography and recording may be restricted during some performances, so ask before you film.
