Why we recommend it

I'm Free Walking Tours has been leading visitors around Sydney since 2009, and it now also runs tours in Melbourne, Brisbane and Auckland. Its tours work on a pay-what-you-feel basis: there is no fixed price, and at the end of the tour each guest decides what the experience was worth. The company deliberately does not suggest an amount, so that anyone can join regardless of budget.

The main tour is the Sydney Sights Free Walking Tour, which starts at 10:30 every day. It lasts two and a half to three hours and covers about 3.5 km through the city centre. Guides meet guests in the square between St Andrew's Cathedral and Town Hall on George Street, near the Town Hall light rail stop, and are easy to spot in bright green I'm Free t-shirts.

From Town Hall, the route passes through the Queen Victoria Building, along Market Street to Pitt Street Mall, and on to Hyde Park and the Archibald Fountain, with a short break of about ten minutes near public toilets around halfway. Sights along the way include Sydney Tower, Hyde Park Barracks, St Mary's Cathedral and Martin Place, and the tour finishes near Campbells Cove at Circular Quay, close to The Rocks, with views of the Opera House and Harbour Bridge.

Other tours include the shorter Sydney Highlights Free Walking Tour, which starts at 15:00 on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and lasts about an hour and a half, and The Rocks Free Walking Tour, which starts at 18:00 daily and focuses on the history and hidden corners of Sydney's oldest neighbourhood. Private tours with flexible start times can also be arranged.

Booking is free but required: use the join a tour option on the website to check availability and reserve your place. Groups of ten or more, and organised school or tertiary groups, cannot join the public tours and should book a private tour instead. Wear comfortable shoes and bring water and sun protection, as much of the route is outdoors.

The tours suit first-time visitors, solo travellers and budget-conscious groups who want an introduction to the city's history and layout, along with practical tips for the rest of their stay. Town Hall station is directly beside the meeting point.
