Why we recommend it

Bondi Beach is Sydney's best-known stretch of sand, a curve of about a kilometre between two sandstone headlands roughly 7 km east of the city centre. Its surf lifesaving clubs, Bondi Surf Bathers' and North Bondi, were both founded in 1907, and the beach remains a place where locals swim, surf, run and meet friends throughout the year, not only in summer.

Behind the sand, a grassy park and a long promenade lead up to Campbell Parade, which is lined with cafés, shops and places to eat. At the southern end of the beach is the Bondi Icebergs ocean pool, whose swimming club dates back to 1929, and the cliff path above it marks the start of the coastal walk to Tamarama, Bronte and Coogee. The northern end is usually calmer, with a rock pool and grassy slopes popular for picnics.

Bondi is also a place for events and outdoor culture. In spring, the Sculpture by the Sea exhibition fills the clifftop path between Bondi and Tamarama with large outdoor artworks for around three weeks, and the beach hosts surf carnivals and other community events through the year.

Safety matters here. Always swim between the red and yellow flags, which mark the area patrolled by lifeguards, and follow any instructions they give. Rip currents are common, especially at the southern end, and conditions change quickly. Surf schools offer lessons for beginners if you want to try the waves with supervision.

The beach suits families, surfers, runners and anyone keen to see Sydney's outdoor lifestyle. Weekday mornings are the quietest times, while summer weekends can be very busy, so arrive early for space on the sand. In winter, the headlands are a good place to look for migrating whales offshore. There is shade along the promenade but little on the beach itself, so bring sun protection.

There is no train station at Bondi Beach. Take a train to Bondi Junction and then a short bus ride down to the beach, or catch a direct bus from the city centre. Parking nearby is limited and expensive, so public transport is the easier option. Combine a visit with lunch on Campbell Parade or a walk south along the clifftops, and consider a drink at the Icebergs bar above the pool as the sun goes down.
