Historic Malay-Muslim quarter around Sultan Mosque, with conserved shophouses on Haji Lane and Arab Street now filled with boutiques, cafés and bars.
Good to know
Kampong Gelam, also spelt Kampong Glam, is one of Singapore's oldest quarters and the historic heart of its Malay and Muslim communities. Sultan Mosque, with its golden dome, anchors the area, while the conserved shophouses of Haji Lane, Arab Street, Baghdad Street and Bussorah Street are home to textile merchants, independent boutiques, galleries, cafés and bars.
Wander slowly: Arab Street is good for fabrics and rugs, Haji Lane for murals and small shops, and Bussorah Street for the classic view of the mosque. Dress modestly if you plan to enter the mosque and avoid prayer times. Late afternoon into evening is the liveliest period, and Bugis MRT station is a short walk away. Zam Zam, on North Bridge Road, is the obvious place for murtabak.
