Why we recommend it

Asakusa Imahan has been serving beef since 1895, and its Kokusai-dori main restaurant is a traditional setting in which to try sukiyaki, thin slices of marbled Wagyu simmered at the table in a sweet soy broth and dipped in raw egg. Shabu-shabu, where the beef is swished through a light stock, is also offered. Staff cook the first pieces for you, which helps if you have not tried it before.

Prices start from 5,390 yen for a lunch set and climb steeply for premium cuts, Kobe beef and kaiseki courses, and a 10 per cent service charge applies above a set spend. It is open daily from 11:30 to 21:30, with a break in seating between 14:30 and 16:00. Dinner reservations are taken by phone only, and lunch sets cannot be reserved, so arrive early. It is a short walk from Tawaramachi Station.
