A sprawling, open-late izakaya in Nishi-Azabu with handmade soba, charcoal skewers and tempura, made internationally famous by a scene in Kill Bill.
Good to know
Gonpachi in Nishi-Azabu is a big, theatrical izakaya set in a building styled like an old Japanese warehouse, with a central dining hall overlooked by wooden balconies. It became known around the world after appearing in Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill, and it remains a lively choice for groups and first-time visitors. The menu covers handmade soba made from buckwheat ground in-house each morning, charcoal-grilled skewers and tempura fried to order, and there are dedicated vegan and halal menus.
It is open every day from 11:30 until 03:30, which makes it a useful late-night option in a district known for its bars. After 17:00 there is a minimum spend per person, so it is better for a proper meal than a quick drink. Book online or by phone for evenings, especially with a group. Roppongi Station is around ten minutes' walk.
