Hotel
The Plaza
Opened in 1907 at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, the Fairmont-managed Plaza is one of New York's most storied grand hotels.
A discreet Upper East Side landmark run by Rosewood, home to the mural-lined Bemelmans Bar and the Café Carlyle cabaret room.
Good to know
The Carlyle is the Upper East Side's classic luxury address, a short walk from Central Park and Museum Mile on a quiet stretch of Madison Avenue at East 76th Street. Operated by Rosewood Hotels, it is known for discretion and polished service rather than flash.
Its two famous venues are reasons to visit in their own right. Bemelmans Bar, decorated with murals by Ludwig Bemelmans, the illustrator of the Madeline books, has nightly piano music and late-night jazz, while Café Carlyle is an intimate supper club for cabaret. Staying here puts the Met, the Frick and the Guggenheim within walking distance.
