Why we recommend it

The Metropolitan Museum of Art sits on the eastern edge of Central Park, and its Beaux-Arts facade on Fifth Avenue leads into a collection so large that no single visit can cover it. Highlights include the Temple of Dendur in its glass-walled wing, the Arms and Armor galleries, European old masters, and the period rooms of the American Wing.

Pick two or three areas in advance rather than trying to see everything. Fridays and Saturdays stay open until 9pm, which makes for quieter evening visits. The museum is closed on Wednesdays, and a standard ticket also covers same-day entry to The Met Cloisters in Fort Tryon Park, further uptown.
