Nigerian media personality, Vlogger, Television host, Toke Makinwa has stated that she’s under a lot of pressure from parents who tell her she’s a role model to their kids.
The television host took to her twitter page on Friday, September 11, 2020 to address the issue of being a role model and advised parents to desist from calling her such, saying she’s no one’s role model.
She said,
“Guys I gotta get this off my chest, pls stop calling me your role model, I am no one’s role model, me sef I am looking for “role model”. The pressure of “my kids love you and you are their role model” has to stop. Raise your kids to see themselves as a work in progress”
“If a part of my life inspires you, by all means, use it as a guideline to be better, pls I am also trying out this thing called life. I am not perfect; I will disappoint you with no apologies. I disappoint myself too, the difference is I get up and move on”.
We cannot blame Toke for being so blunt in her comments. It has become a norm for the public to view a celebrity’s life as perfect. However, the reality is that they are human beings too. They make mistakes, they fall and rise again, and they disappoint themselves as Toke has already pointed out. We should appreciate that Vlogger’s transparency and take her advice.
Celebrities are not as perfect as they seem. It is very okay to look up to them sometimes but we should not forget that it is important to set standards for ourselves also. We should not get lost while trying to be someone else but we should work on becoming the best versions of ourselves.
