The 2024 Summer Olympics (French: Jeux olympiques d’été de 2024), officially the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad (French: Jeux de la XXXIIIe Olympiade) and commonly known as Paris 2024, is an upcoming international multi-sport event. France! Paris and 16 other cities across the nation unleash the Olympic spirit from July 26th to August 11th, 2024. There is also one subsite in Tahiti—an island within the French overseas country and overseas collectivity of French Polynesia.

Paris was awarded the Games at the 131st IOC Session in Lima, Peru, on 13 September 2017. After multiple withdrawals that left only Paris and Los Angeles in contention, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) approved a process to concurrently award the 2024 and 2028 Summer Olympics to the two cities.

Paris 2024 will feature the debut of breaking (also known as breakdancing) as an Olympic event, and it will be the final Olympic Games held during the presidency of IOC President Thomas Bach.

Will the opening ceremony take place in a stadium? let’s find out in our next section.

While Paris bathes in the Olympic spotlight, the Games’ spirit spills out far beyond the City of Lights! Neighboring cities like Saint-Denis, Le Bourget, Nanterre, Versailles, and Vaires-sur-Marne join the party, hosting their share of exhilarating competitions. But the map doesn’t end there.

Feel the pulse of handball in Lille, a brisk 225 kilometers north of Paris. Watch the sails billow and football stars shine in Marseille, basking in the Mediterranean sun 777 kilometers south. And for a truly breathtaking experience, hop on a plane to the remote village of Teahupo’o in French Polynesia, a staggering 15,716 kilometers away, where the waves will be the ultimate Olympic champions in the surfing competition.

Football fans, rejoice! Five more cities – Bordeaux, Décines-Charpieu, Nantes, Nice, and Saint-Étienne – bring the beautiful game to their home turf, many boasting Ligue 1 pedigree.

As the official website paris2024.org declares, these Games won’t be confined to one region. The action unfolds across three distinct stages: the beating heart of Paris, the sprawling ÃŽle-de-France region, and venues scattered throughout France itself, totaling a whopping 35 locations. So, no matter where you stand, the Olympic spirit will find you.

Get ready for a summer where geography melts away, united by the magic of the Games. Paris may be the stage, but the whole of France gets to play, cheer, and dream under the Olympic flame.

One interesting aspect of the Olympics opening ceremony is the torch, let’s talk about it.

Paris Olympics Opening Ceremony – The Torch Bearers

According to the official website of the Paris Olympics.  The Torch Relay is a key moment and an eagerly awaited part of the Games. As of May 2024, 11,000 Torch Bearers will be forming a relay to celebrate the arrival of the Games in France.

In 2024, France will be welcoming the Torch again, after previously welcoming it for the Olympic Winter Games in Grenoble (1968) and the Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Albertville (1992).

Lit in Olympia, Greece, the Olympic Torch will start its journey at sea, on board the Bélem, a majestic three-masted ship, crossing the Mediterranean from Athens to Marseille. The Olympic Torch Relay will then set out across France, showcasing its various regions and communities, from the mainland to overseas departments and territories, offering everyone the possibility to see the Torch.

The Paralympic Flame

will also be lit where it first shone: in Stoke Mandeville, in the United Kingdom. At the end of August, the Flame will cross the Channel for a Relay in mainland France, before returning to Paris to light the cauldron for the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games.

Now that we have discussed about the Olympic torch, let’s see the details of the Olympics closing ceremony
