History of Oktoberfest
Oktoberfest is an annual festival in Munich, Germany. This festival originated on October 12, 1810, in celebration of the marriage of the crown prince of Bavaria, who later became King Louis I, to Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen. So, the organizers invited all the townspeople to attend the wedding festival, which took place in the fields outside of the city gates.
They later named the wedding field Theresienwiese after the Princess, and the townspeople asked King Ludwig to continue the celebration the following year because the party was fantastic. After which Oktoberfest becomes a 2 weeks annual celebration.
The festival officially kicks off at noon on the second to last Saturday in September when the mayor of Munich cries “O’zapft is” (It’s open) as he taps the first barrel at the Schottenhamel Tent. On the first Sunday in October, the celebration comes to an end. Furthermore, Oktoberfest runs from 10 am – 11:30 pm on weekdays and from 9 am–midnight on weekends.

The Armbrustschützen tent was established in 1895 by the “Winzerer Fähndl” crossbowmen’s guild. So, it has a rich history and is an integral part of the Wiesn festival.
Originally, a tent was set up to entertain marksmen and visitors, hosting shooting championships. Over time, the tent underwent renovations and new constructions, eventually becoming the Armbrustschützenzelt. Thus, the name itself reflects the longstanding tradition of marksmanship at the Wiesn. Today, the tent is best for its delicious food, exceptional hospitality, and lively atmosphere.
The connection to the shooting tradition is still evident within the tent, with a marksman statue on the tower and the eagle of the crossbowmen’s guild adorning the main entrance. In addition, the menu at the Armbrustschützen tent offers a variety of traditional Bavarian delicacies. The famous Fischer-Vroni in Wiesn offers traditional Steckerlfisch, a traditional Oktoberfest highlight, prepared on an open grill for Wiesn guests. Here you will enjoy Augustiner beer from wooden barrels and enjoy the Bavarian LGBTQ scene during the second Wiesn Monday, a popular party day.
Josef Pravida built a half-timbered house in 1904 on the Wiesn, known as Fischerhütte zum Holländer. After World War II, Fisch Winter KG took over fish sales, and the family business remains. The tent moved to Wirtsbudenstraße in 1998 for fire safety.
The Fischer-Vroni, located in the Wiesn, offers a variety of grilled fish, including mackerel, whitefish, trout, and char. In addition, the Steckerlfisch is grilled fish on a stick and smoked like the old days, on a surface fire, with the sausages grilled on charcoal. So, the tradition at Fischer-Vroni is that Augustiner beer from wooden barrels is served in cool steins. Daily lunch dishes include organic roast chicken and roast pork, and children’s dishes are also available.

5. Hacker-Festzelt (Big Tent)
Hacker Festzel is designed elaborately as the “heavens of Bavaria with massive wooden beams of the roof construction and a clad with light blue fabric. So, under this tent here you get the feeling you’re sitting under an open blue sky with white, fleecy clouds. Thus, this is why it has a special romantic atmosphere and gets full before the afternoon.
The rustic Hacker Festzelt was rebuilt in 2016 to feature a new 2,000-square-meter painting by Rudi Reinstadler. So, the painting depicts various scenes from Munich city life, including a picnic on the Isar, surfers at the Eisbach Wave, and a TV shoot scene in front of the Siegestor. The tent still retains its revolving music podium with the Schäffler crown and the famous sky, creating a heavenly atmosphere. Additionally, the modern “shed roof” has ventilation beams that are open for fresh air.
The ox and veal that most visitors personally carve originate from the Munich region. The Kraus family from Ismaning provides visitors with sauerkraut, red cabbage, potatoes, and vegetables. So, the Roiderer host family emphasizes the significance of regional quality and products in their statement on the menu.
Alongside traditional dishes like roast chicken and pork hock, appetizers such as tartar are available, and for vegetarians, there are ricotta and spinach bread dumplings.”

7. Hofbräu festival (Big Tent)
The Hofbräu festival tent is the second largest tent at the Wiesn Oktoberfest and the only one where standing and dancing are allowed. Therefore, it is a must visit tent during the 2023 Oktoberfest MunichIt. It can accommodate around 10,000 visitors. Every year, wreaths made of hop vines from the Holledau region are placed under the tent’s roof.
The angel Aloisius, known from the satire “Ein Münchner im Himmel” by Ludwig Thoma, is depicted enjoying himself amidst the hops. However, instead of fulfilling his mission to provide divine advice to the Bavarian state government, he is depicted as being drunk in the Hofbräuhaus.
The Hofbräu-Festzelt, representing the famous Staatliche Hofbräuhaus, has only been present at the Wiesn since 1952. It is particularly popular among international visitors, especially those from English-speaking countries like England, Australia, and New Zealand.
To accommodate the guests’ desire to dance on tables, a standing area was set up, which is unique to the Hofbräu tent. In addition, the tent offers a variety of culinary options, including roast chicken, pork knuckle, yeast dumplings, salads, meatless dishes, and children’s meals. They also have affordable daily lunch specials.

8. Löwenbräu-Festzelt (Big Tent)
The impressive four-and-a-half-meter lion in the tent has guarded the entrance since 1949 and has been roaring “Löööwenbräu” every minute. So, makes it hard to miss both visually and acoustically. Children, especially those who enjoy the beer tents from the outside, love the lion but also feel a bit afraid of it.
The 37-meter-tall lion’s tower in the Löwenbräu-Festzelt catches the eye from afar. Fans and players of soccer club TSV 1860 München, who are loyal to their mascot and the blue and white tent, regularly visit the Löwenbräu-Festzelt.
The Löwenbräu tent debuted at the Oktoberfest in 1910. Wiggerl Hagn had been the landlord of the brewery tent since 1979 and previously hosted the Schützenfestzelt since 1953 alongside his father. However, now Stephanie Spendler(his daughter) is the current host.
The Löwenbräu menu satisfies the desires of traditional Wiesn guests, offering a variety of dishes such as Lower Bavarian duck with potato dumplings, pork sausages with barreled sauerkraut, ox bouillon, breast of veal, sweetbread sausage, and Carinthian porcini noodles for vegans.
One specialty is the “Bratreindl” for two people, a roasting pan that combines knuckles of pork, duck, and suckling pig, supplied by the renowned butcher Markus Bauch from the Munich wholesale market. One of the best tent to visit during the Oktoberfest Munich

9. Käfer Wiesn-Schänke(Big Tent)
The Käfer tent (Käfer Wiesn-Schänke) offers visitors a unique experience in a genuine Bavarian log cabin. So, the tent creates an idyllic atmosphere resembling an Alpine farm, with rustic and cozy decor, elaborate flower arrangements, and authentic antiques for the Octoberfest Munich. The party in the Käfer tent extends beyond the usual closing time, allowing guests to celebrate until half past twelve in the morning with beer or champagne.
The Käfer Wiesn-Schänke originated in 1971 as a small chicken grill with 50 seats. Since then, it has become an integral part of Oktoberfest. In 1972, the first Käfer host, Gerd Käfer, decided to build a rustic wooden log house instead of a traditional beer tent. Michael Käfer, Gerd Käfer’s son, has been welcoming visitors since 1995. The renowned Feinkost Käfer, known for its gourmet foods, has been in existence since 1930, founded by Elsa and Paul Käfer, the great-grandparents of the current festival host.
The Käfer Wiesn-Schänke is a haven for gourmets. The menu features traditional delicacies such as sumptuous snack plates, crispy duck, and delicious saddle of venison. The pastries served at the end are a special highlight.

10. Kufflers Weinzelt(Big Tent)
At the Wiesn, beer is not the only option. The Weinzelt offers a wide selection of wines, sparkling wine, and champagne. The rustic wood paneling creates the ambiance of a Franconian vineyard, making visitors feel at home. Hence you can sit on comfortable corner benches in cozy wooden boxes and enjoy live music late into the night, while most other tents have already closed during the Octoberfest Munich Festival.
Having a wine tent at the world’s largest beer festival is not a new concept. Since 1885, good wine has had a permanent place at the Wiesn. Initially, there were smaller bodegas and wine stands. However, the current wine tent was introduced to the Wiesn in 1984 by the Nymphenburger Sektkellerei. Since then, it has stood proudly at the front of the Oktoberfest, offering a splendid view of Bavaria.
Guests visit the Weinzelt not only for wine, Prosecco, and a relaxed atmosphere but also for the extensive menu. The culinary diversity is unparalleled, combining highlights from various Kuffler restaurants in Munich. It features Bavarian dishes from Haxnbauer, fish dishes from Seehaus in the English Garden, and exotic dishes like shrimp from the Mangostin Asia restaurants.

11. Marstall Festzelt(Big Tent)
The stylish interior of the marquee gives a preview of its colorful Art Nouveau façade. Inside, you will find a mixture of Bavarian coziness and an exuberant atmosphere, where they serve Spaten and Franziskaner beer. During the day, families can enjoy themselves to the fullest. You can relax with good music and a menu that will make your mouth water. Only in the evening, you can experience the exuberant party atmosphere here. People have experienced that the big bar at the back of the balcony is the most crowded.
Since 2014, the Marstall has had a firm place at the Oktoberfest as the successor to the Hippodrome. The tent design draws inspiration from the history of the Wiesn, which has a close connection to horses. The name “Marstall” used to refer to the Royal Riding School, and in 1810, they held a horse race on the Theresienwiese to honor the royal bride and groom, marking the birth of Oktoberfest. The eye-catching decorative horses spread throughout the tent serve as a reminder of this.
The Marstall offers traditional Wiesn dishes such as chicken or ox roast, as well as unusual delicacies like fawn’s back with chanterelles and giant black tiger prawns. The homemade “Kaiserschmarrn” (sugared pancakes) with plums and apple sauce is highly popular. They have created special offers for children and seniors. Additionally, they provide a selection of certified organic, vegetarian, and vegan dishes, including homemade quinoa and chickpea patties. You can enjoy a tasty Wiesn beer by the Spaten Brewery or a delicious Franziskaner.

14. Pschorr-Festzelt Bräurosl(Big Tent)
The festival hall, named after the captivating Rosi Pschorr, daughter of the former Pschorr innkeeper, exudes her charm and allure. Visitors to Oktoberfest Munich were so enamored by her beauty that the tent was promptly christened in her honor. To preserve her exceptional grace and beauty, a painting will grace the entrance of the tent in the years to come. In 2020, festival host Peter Reichert took over the marquee, which had been established in 1901, from the Heide family of innkeepers, who had faithfully served beer for 83 years.
The traditional tent is replete with Bavarian delicacies, seamlessly woven into its fabric. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., guests can relish in the daily changing lunch menu, featuring delectable offerings such as beef tartare on Mondays and “Kalbsfiaß bacha” – roasted calf’s feet on Thursdays. The “Krönfleisch kitchen” tantalizes taste buds with white sausages, stock sausages, and overnight cooked ox roast between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Throughout the day, the sausage fryer delights guests with veal sweetbread sausage and Rostbratwürstl. Vegetarians and vegans need not fret, as the Bräurosl caters to their needs with quinoa patties and spinach-cheese pretzel dumplings. Naturally, the festival beer from Hacker-Pschorr flows abundantly at the Bräurosl.

15. Schottenhamel-Festhalle(Big Tent)
The Schottenhamel-Festhalle is an essential part of Oktoberfest in Munich. It is here that the official opening of the festival takes place each year, marked by the tapping of a barrel. At noon on the first day of Oktoberfest, the mayor of Munich skillfully taps the first barrel of beer, exclaiming, “It’s tapped! To a peaceful Wiesn!” Only then do the other tents begin serving beer. The reason for choosing the Schottenhamel as the location for this tradition dates back to 1950 when Thomas Wimmer, the mayor at the time, officially tapped the event here for the first time. According to legend, Wimmer was in a rush due to having to open a mass at Theresienhöhe shortly before noon, amidst heavy rainfall. In his haste, he took the shortest route into a tent, which happened to be the Schottenhamel. Whether this account is entirely accurate remains uncertain. Nonetheless, the Schottenhamel’s association with Oktoberfest and its historical significance make it the ideal venue for the tapping ceremony.
