Good to know
Taste Hungary is a Budapest company specialising in food and wine experiences, and it describes its Budapest Culinary and Wine Walk as the city's first food tour, established in 2008. Over the years it has grown into a respected source of knowledge about Hungarian food and wine, running walking tours, tastings and longer trips around the country.
The flagship tour is the morning Culinary and Wine Walk, which lasts about five hours and introduces Hungarian food culture through tastings in markets, shops and eateries, with plenty of context about the ingredients and history behind the dishes. An evening walk in the Palace District, lasting around four hours, focuses on the restaurants and bars of this neighbourhood of grand 19th-century townhouses. Both are a good way to get your bearings early in a trip and collect recommendations for the rest of your stay.
Wine is a particular strength. The company runs The Tasting Table, a wine cellar on Bródy Sándor utca where daily tastings take place at 15:00 and 18:00. The afternoon Wine, Cheese and Charcuterie Tasting lasts about two hours and pairs five Hungarian wines with local cheeses and cured meats, which is an excellent introduction to grapes such as Furmint and Kékfrankos and to regions most visitors have never heard of. Across the street, the company's wine shop sells bottles to take home and opens from Monday to Saturday, midday to 20:00.
Beyond the city, Taste Hungary organises multi-day food and wine trips, such as a winter trip to Budapest in December and journeys to wine regions in southern Hungary. Private tours and events can also be arranged for groups.
Tours suit food lovers, couples, solo travellers and anyone curious about Hungarian wine, and they are best booked early in your stay. Tell the company about dietary requirements when booking, and wear comfortable shoes for the walking tours. The cellar and shop are in the Palace District behind the Hungarian National Museum, a short walk from Kálvin tér on metro lines M3 and M4 and from Astoria on M2. Check meeting points on your booking confirmation, as they vary by tour.
