Why we recommend it

Licorería Limantour opened on Avenida Álvaro Obregón in 2011 and has become one of the cornerstones of Mexico City's cocktail scene. It has appeared on The World's 50 Best Bars list regularly since 2014, came 52nd in the extended 2025 ranking and was placed 20th in North America's 50 Best Bars in 2026. The bar is overseen by José Luis León, and there is now a second branch in Polanco. When Handshake's co-owner Erik Van Beek arrived in Mexico in 2019, he counted Limantour among the long-established bars that already defined the city's scene, and in 2025 it held ninth place in North America's 50 Best Bars.

The Roma bar is spread over two floors with an Art Deco-inspired design and what The World's 50 Best calls a laid-back Latin vibe. You can sit upstairs at a table or gather around the bar downstairs to watch the bartenders at work. The menu mixes familiar names with drinks built on regional Mexican flavours, so it is a good place both for a well-made classic and for something you will not find at home. The World's 50 Best puts the average cocktail at around 11 US dollars, which is moderate by the standards of the city's top bars.

The Roma bar opens from 18:00 to midnight from Monday to Thursday, from 15:00 to 2:00 on Friday and Saturday, and from 15:00 to midnight on Sunday. Reservations are taken through OpenTable, and booking is sensible if you have a fixed night in mind, especially on Friday and Saturday when the bar stays open until 2:00.

Limantour suits couples, groups of friends and anyone interested in cocktails. It works as a first stop before dinner in Roma Norte or as the main event of a night out. Allow an hour or two for a couple of drinks.

If you are staying in Polanco, the second Limantour is at Oscar Wilde 9, with longer hours from Wednesday to Saturday. In Roma, the bar is close to Contramar, Rosetta and the cafés of the neighbourhood, so it is easy to pair with dinner nearby. The bar lists Facebook and Instagram, under the handle limantourmx, as its contact channels, so message there if you have questions before you go.
