View details — Licorería LimantourMexico City's nightlife covers everything from award-winning cocktail bars to cantinas that have been pouring drinks for more than a century. Handshake Speakeasy, hidden behind a secret door in Colonia Juárez, has been ranked number one in the world, and Licorería Limantour in Roma Norte has been a regular on The World's 50 Best Bars list since 2014. Both are busy at weekends, so book ahead through their websites.
For something more traditional, Bar La Ópera on 5 de Mayo is famous for the bullet hole said to have been left by Pancho Villa, and Salón Tenampa on Plaza Garibaldi has been the home of mariachi celebrations since 1925. Pulquería Las Duelistas offers a cheap and colourful introduction to pulque and its fruit and vegetable curados. Jazz fans should head to Zinco Jazz Club in the centre, which has live music from Wednesday to Saturday. Limantour and Salón Tenampa stay open until 2:00 at weekends, while Bar La Ópera closes earlier. Use ride-hailing apps or official taxis to get home late at night, especially from the centre and Plaza Garibaldi.
