Why we recommend it

Hija Mía Coffee Roasters brought a touch of Australasian café culture to Medellín. It was opened around 2015 by Shaun, a New Zealander, and its name, which means "my daughter" in Spanish, comes from an affectionate expression used by his father-in-law. From the start the café served flat whites and espresso made with Colombian beans roasted on site, in teal porcelain ACME cups shipped from New Zealand.

Roasting remains at the heart of the business. Hija Mía roasts in small batches, which, as the company puts it, gives it the flexibility to roast fresh for every order. Its coffee comes from across Colombia, and its stated philosophy is coffee excellence built on respect for both the produce and the people who nurture, pick and process it. In its early years the café used a small three-kilo roaster and an espresso machine brought from Melbourne, and its menu of quiches, sweet and savoury pastries and brownies with ice cream gave it a laid-back Antipodean feel.

Today the café is in Barrio Manila, part of El Poblado, at Calle 11A No. 43D-117. It opens every day of the week from 7:00 to 21:00, which makes it one of the more useful cafés in the area for both an early breakfast coffee and an evening stop.

Beyond the cup, Hija Mía runs barista workshops for anyone who wants to improve their home brewing, sells gift cards and branded merchandise, and has an online shop. It offers flat-rate shipping for coffee and merchandise to the United States and Canada, so it is easy to send beans home after your trip. The shop shows prices in either US dollars or Colombian pesos, and the flat rate to North America covers orders of up to two kilos.

The café suits coffee enthusiasts, remote workers and travellers staying in El Poblado or Manila who want a reliable flat white. Order an espresso-based drink to see what the roastery does best, and ask which Colombian origins are currently being roasted.
