Why we recommend it

The Grand Café de la Poste dates from the 1920s, when the French were laying out Guéliz as the new town of Marrakech, and it stands beside the central post office. Local legend has it that the painter Jacques Majorelle and Marshal Lyautey both spent time here, a story the café itself presents with a wink. It was taken over in 2005 and renovated by the design studio Studio KO, which kept the period atmosphere intact.

The interiors are the reason many people come. A wooden staircase, louvred shutters, ceiling fans, checked floors and dark wood give it the feel of a colonial-era brasserie, and the palm-shaded terrace is one of the most pleasant places in Guéliz to sit outside. Upstairs, a music salon hosts jazz and soul evenings, which makes it a good option for a night out in the new town.

The kitchen serves French brasserie cooking, so this is the place for breakfast and coffee in the morning, a brasserie lunch, or a long dinner with wine. Many visitors simply stop for a coffee on the terrace between sightseeing stops, as the café opens early and stays open late. It suits couples, business travellers and anyone wanting a change from Moroccan food.

The café opens daily from 08:30 to 01:00. You do not need a reservation for a coffee on the terrace, but book for dinner, particularly at weekends and on music nights, by phone or through the website's contact form. Allow half an hour for a coffee or a couple of hours for a meal. Prices are higher than in ordinary local cafés, reflecting the setting.

The Grand Café de la Poste is in central Guéliz, a short taxi ride from Jemaa el-Fnaa and about ten minutes by taxi from the Jardin Majorelle and the Musée Yves Saint Laurent, so it fits neatly into a morning in the new town. Avenue Mohammed V, Guéliz's main street, with its shops and galleries, is a short walk away, and the cocktail bar Baromètre is nearby for a later drink. Taxis are easy to find on the surrounding boulevards for the return to the medina, even late at night. The café's long hours also make it a reliable choice on Sundays and public holidays.
