Thing to do
Gwangjang Market
One of Seoul's oldest traditional markets, dating from 1905, where rows of food stalls serve mung bean pancakes, mayak gimbap and noodles beside fabric merchants.
A free fountain show on Banpo Bridge over the Han River, recognised by Guinness as the world's longest bridge fountain, running from April to October.
Good to know
The Moonlight Rainbow Fountain turns Banpo Bridge, one of the main crossings of the Han River, into a giant water feature. Hundreds of nozzles along both sides of the bridge shoot jets of water out over the river, and in the evening shows they are lit in changing colours and choreographed to music. Guinness World Records has recognised it as the longest bridge fountain in the world, and it has become one of the city's favourite free evening outings.
The fountain runs from April to October. Each show lasts about 20 minutes, with a midday performance and several evening shows from 19:30, every half hour, and an extra late show in July and August. The evening shows are the ones to see, as the coloured lights reflect on the water and the city lights up behind. Shows may be cancelled in bad weather or for maintenance, so check before you make a special trip.
The best place to watch is Banpo Hangang Park on the south bank, one of the most popular of the riverside parks that run along the Han. People bring picnic mats, order fried chicken delivered to the riverbank or buy snacks and drinks from the convenience stores, and families and groups of friends gather on the steps and lawns. In summer, the park also hosts cultural events and live music on some weekend evenings. Nearby, the Some Sevit floating islands have restaurants and event spaces and are lit at night, and Seoraeseom, a small island between the Dongjak and Banpo bridges, is a pleasant spot for a stroll.
This is a relaxed outing for couples, families and anyone on a budget. Arrive a little before the show to find a good spot near the water, bring a light jacket in spring and autumn, and pack a mat if you want to sit on the grass. On summer weekends the park becomes very crowded, so expect queues at the shops and busy transport afterwards.
The park is about 15 to 20 minutes on foot from Express Bus Terminal Station on Lines 3, 7 and 9, following signs to Banpo Hangang Park.
